History
The history of botanic garden De Kruidhof begins in 1930 when a trial garden for vegetables and fruits was laid out. Later on herbs became more important. From the fifties the State University Groningen used De Kruidhof gardens to carry out research into medicinal possibilities of plants.
The university also supported De Kruidhof to construct the Medicinal Gardens that became well known both in The Netherlands and abroad. Since 1973 De Kruidhof is the municipal garden of Achtkarspelen of which the tourist function has gained importance.
The number of theme gardens is extended to seventeen. In the year 2000 botanic garden Fryslan (Frisian botanic garden) De Kruidhof was registered as an official museum and joined the Dutch Society of Botanic Gardens.
